Toby shot out of his seat suddenly, his whole body rigid, wrenched Eric out of his chair and shuffled him back towards the front door, babbling, “Sorry, I
have no idea what you’re talking about. Well, look at the time.time! I gotta get things ready for when my parents come home. You have to go. Nice talkin’ to you. Bye.”Bye!” The door slammed shut behind Eric, this time, far too fast for him to grab it.
Eric slammed his fist into the door several times. It didn’t open. Finally Eric gave up and turned back to the road. A few steps down the street Eric felt a
rumble in his backpack. He heard the sound of one of the pockets unzipping. A small, red ball with spikes on its top poked its head out.
“I smelled something familiar a little while ago.”
“Wha-“Wha--oh. oh. Pyree. I forgot you were in there. How come you’re only coming out now?”
“I fell asleep. But I just woke up a little while ago-whenago--when I smelled this really familiar scent.”
“Huh,“Huh; that’s weird.”
“I’m going back to sleep.” Again, Eric heard the sound of a pocket zipper.
Eric walked for a few minutes more, pondering what had happened in Toby’s house. He was still so confused.
<Why did I ask that question? And why did he freak out like that.that? That was so totally randomrandom, too.> Eric thought. <There’s something very suspicious about
that.>
Before Eric could continue his thoughts, he was interrupted by a familiar voice calling out behind him from a distance. The voice got closer every second.
“Eric! Hey, stop! I . . . I . . . I need to talk to you!”
Eric turned to see who was calling for him, and was surprised to see Toby racing to catch up to him as fast as his legs could pump down on the pedals of his
bike. Eric stopped walking and allowed Toby to reach him. <He must have been really in a rush> Eric noted, watching as Toby got off his bike and started panting out words in a whisper. Eric made an expression that told Toby he couldn’t understand what the gasping boy was trying to say. Toby put up a hand, gesturing for Eric to wait a moment, while he caught his breath.
After a few deep breaths, Toby finally spoke. “Ca . . .” Toby gasped one more time, “Can you make it to the park? I need to talk to you but it has to be
over there.”
Eric was about to say “no way, not after slamming the door in my face,” but then stopped. He really wanted to know what was going on. <Why’s Toby in
such a rush?> Despite his original decision, Eric found himself agreeing to Toby’s request. “Uh, okay. So when do you want to meet?” asked Eric.
“Right now!” Toby shouted with urgency. “This needs to happen now.”
Eric was a bit taken aback beby the urgency in his voice. But it was now his decision. Would he go and learn what all this strange behavior was about, or turn
away and just head back home-tohome--to face another battle with his mother’s voice? How much more worry would he cause his mother? <Is this really worth it?> Eric felt a vibration, a movement coming from inside his backpack. Remembering what he carried inside his bag, and the question that had initially gotten Toby freaked out, something clicked in Eric’s mind-he made his decision. “Yeah, I can make it.”
“Good, I’m going there right now. I’ll meet you there,” Toby said hurriedly, mounting his bike once again.
